Background of the Study

Youth entrepreneurship is a critical driver of economic development, job creation, and poverty reduction. In Northern Nigeria, where youth unemployment rates are alarmingly high, entrepreneurship presents a viable solution to these socio-economic challenges. However, young entrepreneurs in Zamfara State face significant hurdles that hinder their ability to establish and sustain businesses.

Studies by Musa and Abdullahi (2023) highlight the importance of youth entrepreneurship in addressing economic disparities and fostering innovation. Despite this, young entrepreneurs in Zamfara State struggle with issues such as limited access to capital, inadequate entrepreneurial training, and socio-cultural constraints. These challenges not only stifle their entrepreneurial potential but also contribute to the region’s persistent unemployment and poverty rates (Yakubu & Suleiman, 2024).

This study examines the challenges of youth entrepreneurship in Zamfara State and explores strategies to support young entrepreneurs in overcoming these obstacles.

Statement of the Problem

Youth unemployment remains a pressing issue in Zamfara State, exacerbated by the difficulties young entrepreneurs face in starting and managing businesses. Challenges such as lack of access to finance, poor infrastructure, and limited business education restrict their ability to succeed. Additionally, socio-cultural factors, including family obligations and gender norms, further complicate the entrepreneurial landscape.

Research by Ibrahim and Hassan (2024) indicates that youth entrepreneurship is vital for economic growth, yet the support systems in Zamfara State are inadequate. Without addressing these challenges, the potential of youth entrepreneurship to drive economic development will remain untapped.

This study addresses the problem by investigating the challenges faced by young entrepreneurs in Zamfara State and identifying strategies to enhance their entrepreneurial success.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the challenges faced by youth entrepreneurs in Zamfara State.

  2. To evaluate the impact of these challenges on entrepreneurial success.

  3. To propose strategies for supporting youth entrepreneurship in the region.

Research Questions

  1. What challenges do youth entrepreneurs face in Zamfara State?

  2. How do these challenges affect their entrepreneurial success?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to support youth entrepreneurship?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Youth entrepreneurs in Zamfara State face significant challenges that hinder their success.

  2. Limited access to finance is a major barrier to youth entrepreneurship.

  3. Entrepreneurial training programs significantly enhance the success of young entrepreneurs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on youth entrepreneurs in Zamfara State and examines the challenges they face. It does not include older entrepreneurs or regions outside Zamfara State. Limitations include the diversity of entrepreneurial sectors, which may affect the generalizability of findings.
